We are located in Western North Carolina, in a small town off the Appalachian Trail called Franklin. We welcome you to dine with us and enjoy our twist on modern southern cuisine.  From our thoughtfully prepared food all the way to our hand-crafted specialty cocktails, we strive to bring you excellence. 

Meet the Team

Executive Chef- Walter Shepheard

Chef Walter grew up locally here in Franklin as well as Coastal Virginia. He has been in the culinary business for over 28 years. He specializes in international dishes and loves using locally sourced ingredients in all of his dishes. 

My favorite thing about working for Root and Barrel is the ability to bring my own unique cooking style to my hometown of Franklin, North Carolina

Executive Chef Walter Shepheard

Manager- Sierra Owsley

Sierra grew up in Hawaii and Arizona but made western North Carolina her home in 2017. She has been a part of our team for years serving, bartending, and now managing. When she’s not at the restaurant, she is typically studying and finishing her degree in business law. 

My favorite thing about working at Root and Barrel is being able to meet all of the incredible people of Franklin and of course… the food.

Manager Sierra Owsley

Manager Kim Lucas

Our manager Kim grew up in Florida and moved to Franklin in 2018. She has been an employee since 2019 and has loved it ever since. Kim loves to spend time with her family, take trips with her friends, and make crafty t-shirts and cups in her free time. 

The food, the guests, and the employees are definitely my favorite things about working at Root and Barrel. Our whole staff feels like family.
